Day 3: Thursday 14th July 2016

Due to the hot weather our schedule was changed a bit and we began the day with a water hike in Majrase.  The Majrase is a series of streams and small lagoons flowing down into the Kinneret and this gave us a great chance to cool off in the hot Israeli sun.

After that we visited Tzippori, the place where the Mishnah (codification of Jewish oral law) was written.  Rabbi Yehuda HaNassi, who compiled the Mishnah, lived in Tzippori for 17 years until his death.  The town is mentioned many times in the Talmud as a Jewish city having 18 Synagogues.  In one of the Talmudic mentions the question is asked as to why Tzippori is called by name?  The Talmud answers that it is a city that sits on top of a mountain like a bird (Tzippor is the Hebrew word for a bird).  Tzippori has about 40 ancient mosaics that have been discovered during various excavations.
We then made our way to Kibbutz Lavi guesthouse       (Kibbutz Lavi was founded by mebers of British Bnei Akiva in the earlier years of the modern state of israel) which is to be our home for the next few days.

Before going to bed, we had a session on Tzfat to prepare us for tomorrows visit.

“The water hike was fun and refreshing and tonight’s tochnit (programme) brought us together as a group” Elana Almagor

“It was so meaningful, saying Aleinu at Mincha (afternoon prayer) in the Shul in Tzippori – joining us to the previous generations” Isaac Ansell-Forsyth
